Imaging Low-Energy Ion Outflow in the Auroral Zone

چکیده

The VISualizing Ion Outflow via Neutral atom imaging during a Substorm (VISIONS) sounding rocket mission investigated the factors leading to ion outflow following geomagnetic substorm. In situ and remote sensing instrumentation provided complementary measurements that have been combined yield an in-depth look at phenomena associated with outflow. particular, inclusion of high spatial temporal resolution “images” low-energy neutral (ENA) emissions from nightside auroral zone substorm has led new insights. observed ENAs were spatially structured, strongly regions intense 630.0 nm emissions. in predominantly up-going, consistent thick-target scattering region where ENA mean free path is close or less than atmospheric scale height.

Auroral ion outflow: low altitude energization

The SIERRA nightside auroral sounding rocket made observations of the origins of ion upflow, at topside F-region altitudes (below 700 km), comparatively large topside plasma densities (above 20 000/cc), and low energies (10 eV). Upflowing ions with bulk velocities up to 2 km/s are seen in conjunction with the poleward edge of a nightside substorm arc. The upflow is limited within the poleward e...

LOW-ENERGY-ION ENHANCED DIFFUSION AT THE SURFACE OF METALS

Radiation enhanced diffusion at the surface of metals has been observed and studied for low-energy nitrogen ions at the surface of copper. The displacement of the target atoms during irradiation creates vacancies and other defects near the surface, thus enhancing the diffusion of implanted materials toward the surface and also into the solid. The mechanism has been studied here by a specia...

Outflow of low-energy O ion beams observed during periods without substorms

Numerous observations have shown that ions flow out of the ionosphere during substorms with more fluxes leaving as the substorm intensity increases (Wilson et al., 2004). In this article we show observations of low-energy (few tens of electron volts) ionospheric ions flowing out periods without substorms, determined using the Wideband Imaging Camera (WIC) and Auroral Electrojet (AE) indices. We...
